Artsted Observatory: Xiaoling Jin's profile

HomeEvents

Today we are chatting with Xiaoling Jin, one of the artists part of the Artsted Observatory project in collaboration with VOLTA Art Fairs.

She had been described as «amongst those creatives who are radically transforming a system that is no longer working, conveying thought-provoking messages through their work, and are in the forefront of the technological evolution accelerating the creation of parallel worlds, where even garments are shaped with pixels, and the communication between those who make fashion and those who consume it is more immediate and direct».
This aspect makes her the perfect match for Artsted's aim to change the art industry from within. Here are our questions for Xiaoling.

What is your artistic background?

I'm Xiaoling, a humanwear and 3D designer. My practice focuses on the intersection of fashion, design & technology.

My work focuses on bespoke fashion, fashion in the metaverse, the future of garment technology, and building a bridge between the digital and physical world. I explore self-expression, emotional landscapes, sustainability in the physical world, and the metaverse.

When did you first hear about NFTs?

Not very early, I got to know about NFT around 2017 when the CryptoKitties became very popular.

What are the perks of working with new technologies for artists like you?

As a humanwear designer in both the physical and digital world, I think new technologies are really game-changing in the fashion industry. New technologies break down the material, technical and spatial constraints of traditional fashion, reducing the cost, waste, and pollution in the fashion production process.

My practice also questions the borders of gender and aims to create clothing that fits people of different body types, so digital clothing brings more opportunities and feasibility, which also stimulates my creative motivation.

How did NFTs change your perception of digital art?

Digital fashion has its uniqueness and I believe it is a revolutionary change in the fashion industry. Clothing has long been seen as a traditional and hard-to-change industry, but digital fashion combines clothing with technology, freeing itself from physical constraints and bringing new forms. NFT allows people to redefine digital ownership, creative structure, and the value of the artwork. NFTs bring a new model to both artists and collectors, and through blockchain, everyone can participate in the art market.

What are your future projects in digital art or beyond?
I will work with my studio and we try to launch some new IP and digital fashion NFT collections soon.
