5 questions with the artist: Matteo Casali

HomeArtist Spotlight

Matteo Casali, born in 1994, is an italian visual artist that experiments with painting but also photography and video.
For what concerns his pictorial studio he seeks the synthesis of the mark-stain and the rapidity of execution to capture the immediacy and poetry of the moment, be it of a landscape or a portrait. At the basis of his studio lays the research of the loss of identity - something really important for the artist.

What was your first step in becoming an artist?
Part of my family includes artists - it is from them that I inherited my talent and passion. The other part comes from a working-class background from which I had the chance to create a creative imaginery. All my life was dedicated to art, from when I was really little to the present day.

How do you define yourself in the creative industry?

I define myself as a painter but I also experiment with other mediums such as drawing, photography, video art and digital sculpture. I am trying to establish myself as a painter as well as working on the digital with my NFTs.

What is indispensable while working in your study?
For me it is indispensable to have something to say. Oddly enough, I do not need to be alone or to have music. For me is a constant flow of ideas and observing that does not stop at the canvas.

Who are your favorite artists and who are the ones that built your creative imaginery?
I appreciate the work of many contemporary artists such as Luke Hannam, Michael Armitage, Luc Tuymans but I also look up to many artists of the past such as Matisse, Gaugin or Tiziano, Tintoretto and Veronese.

What kind of reletionship do you have with social media?
I use IG consistently but I am convinced that social media as we know them are going to end soon. I prefer places like the digital garden hosted by Mozilla Hubs and AltspaceVR where I can exhibit my works and meet many artists.
